On a rumour that Elizabeth is to marry her nephew, Lady Catherine descends on Longbourn and demands she promise never to accept him. Elizabeth, unawed, refuses to give any such promise and sends her away furious.

The visit misfires: carrying word of Elizabeth's spirit back to her nephew, it gives him reason to hope.
